Compact Flange

The compact flange, with a unique wedge-shaped seal, has a 20-fold increase in contact area over traditional seals, providing a smaller, lighter, and more sealed connection. The reduction in size of the compact flange is a result of the decreased diameter of the seal, which ultimately leads to a reduction in the cross-section of the sealing surface.

Compact Flange Standard

The internationally used steel pipe flange standards include ASME B16.5, ASME B16.47, and EN 1092-1. The applicable nominal size range of ASME B16.5 is NPS 1/2″～24″ (i.e. DN 15~600 mm); ASMS B16.47 is called the large diameter pipe flange standard, and its applicable nominal size range is NPS 26″～60″ (i.e. DN 650~1 500 mm); EN 1092-1 applies to the nominal size range of DN 10~4 000 mm.

The large-diameter flanges of ASME B16.47 include two series, A and B. Series A is consistent with the American Standards Association for Valve and Pipe Fittings Manufacturers Standardization Standard MSS SP-44 “Steel Pipeline Flanges”; Series B is consistent with the American Petroleum Institute Standard Standard API 605: “Discover our high-quality large-diameter Carbon Steel Flanges designed for nominal pipe sizes 26 through 60, available in Classes 75, 150, 300, 400, 600, and 900. Ensure superior performance and reliability for your industrial applications.”The flange sizes of the two series are completely different and cannot be interchanged.

The pressure grade symbol of ASME B16.5 and ASME B16.47 is Class (pound grade), called the Class series. The class series pressure rating unit is psi, 1 psi = 0.006 895 MPa.

The Class series pressure ratings in ASME B16.5 include Class 150, Class 300, Class 400, Class 600, Class 900, Class 1 500, and Class 2 500. The pressure ratings of the A series in ASME B16.47 include Class 150, Class 300, Class 400, Class 600, and Class 900; the pressure ratings of the B series include Class 75, Class 150, Class 300, Class 400, Class 600, Class 900.

The pressure rating symbol of EN 1092-1 is PN (Pressure Nominal), called the PN series. The unit of the pressure rating value after the symbol PN is bar, 1 bar = 14.5 psi = 0.1 MPa. PN series pressure levels include PN 2.5, PN 6, PN 10, PN 16, PN 25, PN 40, PN 63, PN 100, PN 160, PN 250, PN 320, and PN 400.

This article refers to the pound level of the Class series and the nominal pressure of the PN series as nominal pressure.

The International Organization for Standardization standard ISO 7005-1:2011 “Pipe flanges— Part 1: Steel flanges for industrial and general service piping systems” directly quotes the American standard ASME B16.5 and ASME B16.47 and the European standard EN 1092-1, so it includes the Class series and PN series.

China’s national standard GB/T 9112~9124-2010 “Steel Pipe Flange” series of standards are applicable to steel pipe flanges with a nominal size range of DN 15~600 mm. The modification adopts ASME B16.5-2009 and EN 1092-1:2007, including the relevant technical content of Class series and PN series flanges, but does not adopt the Class 400 pressure level in ASME B16.5-2009.

GB/T 13402-2010 “Large Diameter Steel Pipe Flange” applies to large diameter steel pipe flanges with a nominal size range of NPS 26″~60″ (i.e. DN 650 mm~DN 1 500 mm), and pressure levels include Class 75, Class 150, Class 300, Class 600 and Class 900 series. This standard modification adopts ASME B16.47-2006 and does not adopt the Class 400 pressure level. Moreover, GB/T 13402 does not have PN series pressure levels.
