Difference Between Slip On Flange And Weld Neck Flange

The difference between slip on flange and weld neck flange lies in the connection form between the flange and the pipe.

The Elite Piping Manufacture Co is a professional flange manufacturing company, and flat welding flanges and butt welding flanges are our very important products. Both flanges are welded.

The Difference Between Slip On Flange And Weld Neck Flange Is As Follows

Slip On Flange

Slip on flange is also called lap welding flange. Flat welding flange inserts the pipe into the inner hole of the flange to the appropriate position to connect with the pipe, and then performs lap welding. Its advantage is that it is easier to center during welding assembly and it is cheap, so it has been widely used.

Calculated based on internal pressure, the strength of the flat welding flange is about two-thirds of the corresponding butt-welding flange, and the fatigue life is about one-third of the butt-welding flange. Therefore, flat welding flanges are only suitable for pipeline systems with relatively low pressure levels and where pressure fluctuations, vibrations and oscillations are not serious.

The applicable scope of plate flat welding flange has been increased from the old version PN25 to the current standard PN40. This type of flange is easy to obtain, simple to manufacture, low in cost, and widely used; however, it has poor rigidity and is not recommended for use in places with strict requirements such as flammable, explosive and highly hazardous media. The sealing surface forms include raised surface and full plane.

Weld Neck Flange

Weld neck flange (WN) is also called high neck flange. It differs in that there is a long, sloping high neck from where the flange is welded to the pipe to the flange plate. The wall thickness gradually transitions to the pipe wall thickness along the height direction, improving the stress discontinuity and thus increasing the flange strength.

Butt welding flanges are mainly used in situations with harsh working conditions, such as situations where the flange is subject to greater stress due to thermal expansion or other loads of the pipeline, or where the stress changes repeatedly; pipelines with large pressure and temperature fluctuations and high temperature and high pressure and pipes with sub-zero temperatures. The flange is not easily deformed, has good sealing performance, and is relatively affordable. Suitable for occasions with high pressure, high temperature and large pipe diameter.

The sealing surface types include basic types such as flat surface, raised surface, concave and convex surface, tongue and groove surface, and ring connection surface blue cover.Neck welding flanges are easily hit during transportation because they are large, heavy, expensive and difficult to install and position.

The Differences Between Slip On Flange And Weld Neck Flange Are Divided Into The Following Aspects

Different Usage Scenarios

Welding methods can generally be divided into flat welding and butt welding . Slip on flanges do not need welding pipe inner mouth and flange connection, only one side needs welding, while butt welding flange requires welding of both sides of the flange.

Therefore, flat welding flanges are generally used for low and medium pressure pipelines, and weld neck flanges are used for the connection of medium and high pressure pipelines. Neck butt welding flanges are butt welded to reduce stress concentration. The installation cost, labor cost, and auxiliary material cost are higher because there is an extra production process.

Different Production Processes

Slip on flanges are generally manufactured using steel plate cutting production processes based on usage scenarios. The flat welding flanges produced in this way are more cost-effective. The main disadvantage of flat welding flanges is that they cannot guarantee no leakage. The weld neck flanges have higher requirements for use, so the forging method is chosen for manufacturing. The butt welding flange produced in this way has fewer pores. The disadvantage is that the price is higher. Sometimes rolling flanges are used to produce flanges. Generally, these are the types of production we commonly use. The process is generally more casting, but the cast flange has more pores and lower pressure capacity.

Nominal Pressure Is Different

The nominal pressure of the neck flat welding flange is generally: 06—40MPa, while the nominal pressure of the neck butt welding flange is mostly: 1–25MPa, so the use pressure of the neck flat welding flange is lower than that of the neck butt welding flange.

With many years of flange production experience, we can produce flat welding flanges or butt welding flanges of any material. In addition to flanges used in pipelines, our factory can also produce stainless steel elbows, tees, large and small headers and other connecting parts for customers. Provides purchasing convenience.

Our company produces and operates: butt welding flanges, large flanges, large diameter flanges, flat welding flanges, carbon steel flanges, stainless steel flanges, neck flat welding flanges, ring loose sleeve flat welding flanges, marine and High-pressure flanges and other types of flanges, elbows, tees, pipe caps, large and small pipe fittings; complete specifications, and have a large number of stocks in stock all year round.

In addition, our factory can process and customize special-shaped pipe fittings of various sizes according to customer requirements.

Products are widely used in electric power, chemical industry, pharmaceuticals, oil refining, natural gas, shipbuilding, metallurgy, mining, heating, water treatment, environmental protection, piling, steel structure and many other industries.

The difference between slip on flange and weld neck flange is obvious. When you choose to buy flanges, you should pay attention to distinguish the difference between  weld neck and slip on flange.
